SolarEdge's $36 million refund complicates its recovery story

The cash arrived during the quarter and remained in adjusted earnings. A weaker sales forecast now puts more weight on the underlying business.

SolarEdge received $36 million of tariff refunds during the third quarter, helping both earnings and cash flow. The solar-equipment company reported $20.4 million of cash from operations and $21.1 million of adjusted net income. It still recorded an $8.4 million net loss under generally accepted accounting principles.

The refunds stayed in both GAAP and non-GAAP results. Management estimated non-GAAP gross margin excluding the refunds at approximately 23.6%, within the 22% to 26% range it had forecast in August on that same basis.

A lower fourth-quarter sales target

SolarEdge now forecasts fourth-quarter revenue of $245 million to $275 million. At its September investor day, it had expected $310 million. The new range has a $260 million midpoint, $50 million below the earlier expectation. Management attributed that gap to $35 million from channel inventory, $10 million from pulling back in selected markets and $5 million from currency movements.

The new non-GAAP gross-margin forecast is 17% to 21%, excluding potential tariff refunds. Taken together, the lower sales and margin expectations put pressure on the business after the refund-supported quarter.

There has nevertheless been operating progress. Adjusted net income rose from $3.6 million in the second quarter to $21.1 million in the third. The GAAP net loss narrowed from $30.8 million to $8.4 million. Both periods benefited from tariff refunds.

Cash generation needs its own check

The company reported $7.8 million of free cash flow for the third quarter. Research by Ticker Byline shows that the $36 million refund receipt was larger than the quarter's $20.4 million total operating cash inflow.

SolarEdge ended September with $555.1 million of cash and cash equivalents. It separately reported $42.7 million of restricted cash and $332.7 million as the carrying amount of its convertible notes. Management expects a further sequential revenue decline at the start of 2027. The recovery now depends on stabilizing demand and costs.
