PTC Therapeutics can buy $500 million of stock. What else needs that cash?
The new repurchase limit equals nearly a quarter of September cash and securities. Stronger medicine sales also bring milestone payments and development choices.

PTC Therapeutics authorized up to $500 million of common-stock repurchases on November 3, adding a sizable capital-return option alongside its spending on new medicines.
The board's decision follows stronger product sales and a completed $111 million purchase of the ST-920 development program. Management will decide when and how much stock to buy, subject to market conditions.
How large is the option?
Research by Ticker Byline shows that the maximum authorization equals 23.5% of PTC's latest reported cash-and-securities pool. At September 30, that pool totaled $2.128 billion: $508.9 million of cash and equivalents and $1.619 billion of marketable securities.
Those balances already reflect the September 17 ST-920 purchase. Additional claims on cash include $80 million of accrued milestones owed to former owners of the business behind Sephience, PTC's largest product.
| Item | Amount | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Common-stock repurchases | Up to 500 | Authorized November 3 |
| ST-920 upfront purchase | 111 | Paid September 17 |
| Sephience sales milestones | 80 | Accrued September 30 |
| Additional ST-920 milestones | Up to 100 | Conditional on U.S. approvals |
Product success brings both revenue and payments
Sephience sales reached $181.9 million in Q3, up about 20% from Q2. PTC's total product revenue more than doubled from a year earlier to $275.9 million.
That success also triggered milestone obligations. Sephience's four-quarter global sales passed contractual thresholds of $250 million in Q2 and $500 million in Q3, creating payments of $30 million and $50 million.
On October 29, PTC raised its annual product-sales outlook to $960 million to $990 million, from $850 million to $950 million. Its forecast for research, selling and administrative expenses held, with the ST-920 purchase recorded separately.
Cash generation has more than one moving part
Nine-month operating cash was positive $44.8 million. That includes a $50 million Novartis milestone receipt and absorbs the $111 million ST-920 payment. Management says it remains on track for its 2026 cash-flow breakeven objective.
PTC also refinanced its convertible debt in June, issuing $550 million of zero-coupon notes due in 2031 while retiring the older notes. The cash pool therefore reflects financing and earlier partnership proceeds as well as product sales.
The PTC Therapeutics company profile follows those funding sources, assigned royalties and the obligations alongside the new buyback option.
