FIS cut its annual profit target after meeting its quarterly plan
A new filing reveals a narrow valuation cushion in Banking. The increase in headline free cash flow also depends on excluding taxes from a business sale.

FIS delivered quarterly adjusted earnings within its own forecast, then lowered its annual profit target. The financial-technology company's new outlook points to a weaker finish than its August plan implied.
Third-quarter adjusted EPS was $1.61, inside the $1.58 to $1.62 range published in August. The annual forecast fell to $5.82 to $5.89 from $6.15 to $6.24.
The annual target moved down
Research by Ticker Byline shows that the midpoint of the annual adjusted EPS forecast fell by 34 cents. Quarterly revenue and adjusted EBITDA both finished slightly above the upper ends of the company's earlier ranges.
The revision reaches beyond per-share earnings. FIS reduced its annual adjusted EBITDA range to $5.565 billion to $5.605 billion from $5.730 billion to $5.785 billion.
Its pro forma revenue-growth forecast also fell to 3.1% to 3.6% from 4.5% to 5.0%. That measure adds the acquired Total Issuing Solutions business to the earlier comparison period, adjusts for currency and excludes Corporate and Other revenue.
FIS also completed the sale of a non-core prepaid business on October 20 for more than $100 million in gross proceeds and continues a strategic portfolio review. The earnings release does not provide a numerical bridge allocating the annual forecast changes among portfolio movements, investment and other factors.
A narrower valuation cushion in Banking
Lower Banking projections also prompted a quantitative goodwill test. Goodwill is the acquisition-related value carried above identifiable net assets. FIS estimated that the Banking business was worth about 7% more than its carrying value, compared with more than 50% for Capital Markets. It recorded no third-quarter goodwill impairment.
The June report had already flagged greater sensitivity to adverse assumptions. The new report puts a number on the Banking cushion.
What the cash headline includes
FIS reported $862 million of quarterly free cash flow excluding cash transaction taxes on business sales, up from $798 million. The current figure adds back $167 million of Worldpay sale taxes.
Before that addback, operating cash flow of $976 million less $281 million of capital spending left $695 million. The comparable prior-year figure was $798 million. The company's unchanged annual cash target of $2.15 billion to $2.25 billion uses the measure that excludes those transaction taxes.
Debt remains a priority
FIS reported $20.8 billion of debt outstanding. It continues to limit repurchases and has paused small acquisitions to prioritize debt reduction, a policy already in place in August.
The operating business is still growing. Quarterly adjusted EPS increased 6.6%, and pro forma revenue increased 3.7%. The FIS company profile tracks that growth alongside the revised targets, acquisition effects and the cash measure used to assess progress.
