Royal Gold finances mining assets in exchange for streams and royalties. A stream typically gives it the right to buy metals at an agreed ongoing price after an upfront payment. A royalty provides a share of revenue or production under the relevant contract. Its shares trade on Nasdaq under RGLD.

The company generally leaves mine operation and ordinary operating costs to its partners. Its direct 15% interest in the Hod Maden project also carries project-funding obligations.

Current-quarter adjusted earnings remove investment valuation losses, gains on investment sales and the related tax effects. The year-earlier quarter also removed acquisition costs. Revenue growth reflects higher metals prices and acquired interests. Gold-equivalent ounces convert revenue using the average gold price, rather than measuring physical gold production.

Acquisitions and debt repayment

Royal Gold completed its Sandstorm Gold and Horizon Copper purchases on October 20, 2025. It issued about 18.6 million shares for Sandstorm and paid approximately $126 million in cash for Horizon shares not already held by Sandstorm. The combined accounting purchase price was $4.148 billion; the purchase-price allocation was finalized in the September 2026 quarter.

It borrowed $450 million at closing to repay assumed Sandstorm debt and fund the Horizon cash consideration. Its total revolving-credit balance after closing was $1.225 billion. At that time, Royal Gold estimated repayment within two years, depending on then-current metal prices and no further business-development investments.

Principal fell to $900 million at December 31, 2025, and $150 million at September 30, 2026. The September balance-sheet carrying amount was $146.1 million after debt issuance costs. The final $150 million was repaid on October 19, restoring the full $1.4 billion of committed credit capacity. A separate $600 million expansion option requires additional lender commitments.

Sandstorm and Horizon interests generated $68.1 million of third-quarter revenue. The separately acquired Kansanshi gold stream generated $30.8 million. These portfolio additions and stronger metal prices explain much of the increase in revenue, while the higher share count moderates growth in earnings per share.

Cash flow and shareholder returns

Operating cash flow for the first nine months of 2026 was $973.1 million, compared with $463.1 million a year earlier. The company's $837.4 million of free cash flow deducts $51.0 million of stream and royalty acquisition spending and $84.7 million of loans to Artmin, the company owning Hod Maden.

During those nine months, debt repayments totaled $750 million, dividends $120.8 million and buybacks $79.4 million. Investment-sale proceeds contributed $50.9 million and Sandstorm option exercises $23.5 million. Cash and equivalents fell to $184.5 million at September 30 from $233.7 million at the end of 2025.

The $500 million share-repurchase authorization dates from May 2026. In October, Royal Gold received $46.1 million from selling gold delivered under the Mount Milligan cost-support agreement. The proceeds increase a deferred liability and do not enter revenue.

Other completed 2026 transactions reshaped the portfolio. In February, Royal Gold settled $49.5 million of Bear Creek debt obligations in exchange for $6.2 million in cash, a larger Corani royalty and a new Mercedes royalty. In June, it settled the remaining fixed gold-delivery obligation at Relief Canyon for 5,000 ounces of gold and shares, reducing the stream's carrying value to zero.

Outlook and project developments

Annual gold-sales guidance remains 290,000 to 320,000 ounces. Silver sales are expected at or above the top of the 3.0 million to 3.5 million ounce range, and copper at or above the top of 21 million to 25 million pounds. Other-metals revenue guidance rose to $53 million to $56 million from $34 million to $38 million. August's report had already flagged copper and other metals as tracking around or above their earlier ceilings.

Annual depreciation, depletion and amortization guidance remains $339 million to $379 million, with an effective tax rate of 17% to 22%. These ranges match the August forecast.

After quarter-end, Royal Gold finalized documentation for the final $50 million of Warintza funding, with payment awaiting security registration. It also expected approximately $43 million of incoming proceeds from a partial Great Bear royalty buyback, reducing its royalty to 1.5% from 2%.

The Hod Maden ownership restructuring closed July 17, 2026. Royal Gold retained 15% of Artmin and received a new effective 2.5% net smelter return royalty. Its partner is to fund the next $397 million of project costs before further funding is split 15% to Royal Gold and 85% to the partner.
