The land bill behind Ovintiv's $680 million of free cash flow
Ovintiv generated strong cash flow, but land buying and shareholder payouts drew down cash. Our comparison examines the funding room before the Logan deal.
Beyond the headline.
Inside the numbers.
Ticker Byline
Ovintiv produces oil and natural gas in the Permian and Montney. Completed acreage purchases and shareholder payments drew down quarterly cash as the company repaid debt, while year-to-date debt reduction and low leverage leave capacity for a pending Logan acquisition.
Ovintiv Inc. (NYSE and TSX: OVV) produces oil, natural gas and natural gas liquids in North America. Its main operating areas are the Permian in the United States and the Montney in Canada. Commodity prices, production costs and the mix of assets shape the cash available for drilling, acquisitions, debt repayments and shareholder returns.
Three months ended September 30. USD millions, except per-share figures and production rates. Production is after royalties.

Adjusted earnings remove selected unrealized hedging, impairment, foreign-exchange and disposal effects and use adjusted taxes. The company's free cash flow removes working-capital and certain other asset/liability changes from operating cash, then subtracts capital expenditures. It excludes acquisitions and divestitures.
Higher commodity prices supported the profit improvement. The prior-year quarter also included a $141 million impairment charge, against none in Q3 2026. Acquisitions and disposals changed the operating portfolio, so reported production comparisons are not measures of organic growth.
Q3 operating cash of $1.07 billion left $507 million after capital spending. Completed acreage purchases used $457 million, leaving $50 million before $467 million of shareholder payouts, debt repayments and other cash movements. The company also paid $112 million to repurchase senior debt during the quarter.
| USD millions, at period end | Dec. 31, 2025 | June 30, 2026 | Sept. 30, 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cash | 35 | 700 | 176 |
| Issuer debt | 5,202 | 3,695 | 3,588 |
| Issuer net debt | 5,167 | 2,995 | 3,412 |
Issuer debt includes the current portion of long-term debt. These debt and net-debt figures exclude separately classified lease liabilities. September liquidity totaled approximately $3.8 billion, including $3.5 billion of unused revolving facilities, $141 million of available uncommitted demand lines and cash. Revolving borrowings and commercial paper were zero at September 30.
Net debt was 0.7 times adjusted trailing 12-month EBITDA, a profit measure excluding interest, taxes, depreciation, depletion, amortization and selected other items. This compares with 0.6 times in June and 1.2 times at December 31.
Nine-month buybacks used $815 million and dividends $250 million. Together they represented about 53% of the company's $1.996 billion free cash flow. Management expects full-year returns above 60% of that measure.
The NuVista acquisition issued approximately 30.1 million Ovintiv shares in February. Despite subsequent buybacks, shares outstanding were 270.3 million at September 30, compared with 253.3 million at December 31. A renewed buyback authorization allowing up to 27 million shares began October 5; it is separate from completed Q3 purchases.
NuVista closed on February 3. The current purchase allocation totals approximately $2.75 billion, including issued shares, cash consideration and Ovintiv's preexisting stake. The acquisition-related term loan was repaid after the April sale of the Anadarko assets. That disposal generated approximately $2.82 billion of net proceeds and a $337 million pretax loss.
Q3's $457 million of completed acreage acquisitions comprised $215 million in the United States and $242 million in Canada. These purchases are distinct from the pending Logan transaction.
The Logan agreement was announced October 26, with a value of approximately $890 million including expected net debt at closing. Ovintiv expects cash and short-term borrowings to fund it, with completion in early Q1 2027 subject to approvals and other conditions. Selected assets will be spun out before the acquisition. Management projects approximately $60 million in annual cost savings and improvements in 2027 cash flow per share, using October 20 commodity futures prices.
July's Q3 forecast called for total production of 615,000 to 640,000 barrels of oil equivalent a day and capital spending of $550 million to $600 million. Actual output of 630,600 and spending of $563 million were within those ranges. Oil and condensate of 203,700 barrels a day were below the 205,000 to 210,000 forecast because of third-party downtime and higher royalty rates.
For full-year 2026, total output guidance remains 630,000 to 645,000 barrels of oil equivalent a day and capital spending $2.25 billion to $2.35 billion. The forecast for other natural gas liquids rose modestly. Regional capital midpoints shifted $50 million toward the Permian and away from the Montney.
Q4's outlook assumes the third-party Montney outage continues throughout the quarter. Its duration, the Logan closing, shareholder payments and cash replenishment are the next developments to compare with management's plan.
