IPG Photonics makes industrial and advanced-application lasers. Sales and profits grew, but tariff refunds account for the direction of the year-over-year gross-margin improvement. The company is preparing a cash-funded medical-laser acquisition and further property disposals.
IPG Photonics Corporation (Nasdaq: IPGP) develops and makes fiber lasers and laser systems for industrial manufacturing, medical, defense, semiconductor and other advanced applications. It reports one operating segment, with sales also grouped by application.

Revenue increased 15%. Industrial Solutions sales rose 12% to $239.5 million, while Advanced Solutions sales rose 33% to $48 million. These are application categories. Prior-year comparisons have been recast to move micromachining into Advanced Solutions.
Quarterly adjusted EPS of $0.61 slightly exceeded August's $0.30 to $0.60 forecast. Adjusted EBITDA of $51.5 million was slightly above the earlier $35 million to $51 million range. Sales were within the $265 million to $295 million forecast.
The detailed accounting note records $5.813 million of tariff refund benefits and $0.802 million of offsetting cost-of-sales charges, against a $0.550 million benefit in the comparable 2025 quarter. Ticker Byline's calculation excluding each year's net benefit gives gross margins of approximately 39.0% and 39.3%, respectively. This uses GAAP gross profit as its starting point and differs from IPG's adjusted margin.
Refund-excluded gross margin improved modestly from Q2. Year-over-year manufacturing costs left uncovered by production increased $11.1 million, partly offsetting lower product costs as a proportion of sales.
Management expects revenue of $265 million to $295 million, adjusted gross margin of 37% to 40%, adjusted operating expenses of $91 million to $94 million, adjusted EBITDA of $33 million to $50 million and adjusted EPS of $0.30 to $0.60. These forecasts exclude Lumibird Medical.
At September 30, cash was $710.7 million and short-term investments were $215.3 million, totaling $926 million. Combined cash and short- and long-term investments were $915.9 million at December 31. Much of the increase in cash alone reflects investment maturities.
Nine-month operating cash flow increased to $78.5 million from $46.5 million. Purchases of and deposits on property and equipment were $54.4 million, against $60.9 million. Inventory used $60.2 million of operating cash.
The main U.S. and euro revolving facilities were undrawn at September 30. Other-country facilities included a combined $2 million of guarantees and overdrafts.
IPG signed a share-purchase agreement on September 8 to acquire Lumibird Medical for €300 million in cash, subject to customary adjustments, plus up to €50 million linked to 2026 and 2027 performance. The company plans to use cash on hand. Closing is expected in Q4, subject to approvals and other conditions.
The planned sale of IPG's Belarus operations received government approval on October 14. Closing remains expected in Q4. Impairment charges through September totaled $17.8 million.
A separate property-sale plan approved October 30 is expected to produce an approximately $25 million noncash pretax impairment charge in Q4. The sales are expected in 2027. These are planned disposals, with completion still ahead.
The key operating test is whether higher sales and lower product costs can outpace the manufacturing cost burden. Lumibird's closing, the disposal proceeds and the resulting cash balance will also change the financial picture.
