HNI Corporation (NYSE: HNI) manufactures workplace furniture and residential hearth products. Workplace Furnishings serves offices, education, healthcare and other commercial settings. Residential Building Products sells fireplaces, inserts, stoves and related products through new-construction and remodel-retrofit channels.

The latest quarter ran from July 5 to October 3, 2026. Fiscal 2026 ends January 2, 2027. The prior fiscal year had an extra week in Q4, which management expects to create an approximately three-percentage-point sales-growth headwind in the coming fourth-quarter comparison.

Steelcase integration and the current outlook

November's mature annual operating-profit synergy target is at least $130 million, up from the $120 million used in July and the original August 2025 announcement. HNI expects the original $120 million by the end of year four. The higher mature target has no precise completion date.

Annual adjusted EPS growth remains 20%–25%, matching July's outlook. Management says inflation and international weakness temper Steelcase's near-term contribution. It expects price increases to catch up with higher costs in 2027. Separate manufacturing-network savings in the legacy workplace business are expected to reach a cumulative $30 million in 2028.

Organic revenue, excluding Steelcase and a smaller dealer acquisition, grew 5.6%. Workplace organic revenue increased 5.9%, while Residential Building Products grew 4.8%. Residential growth came from remodel-retrofit sales overcoming weakness in new construction.

July's outlook had called for high-single-digit growth in legacy Workplace sales. The quarter's 5.9% organic increase was slower, but Workplace's adjusted operating margin excluding Steelcase reached 16.2%, up from 12.3%. Management attributed the profit upside to pricing, productivity, expense control and investment timing.

Workplace orders increased 6% and residential orders rose 4%, each year over year. Organic growth and order growth measure different activity: orders precede recognized sales.

Adjusted operating income removes restructuring and other charges, impairment, acquisition costs and purchase accounting. Current-quarter exclusions included $24.8 million of Steelcase intangible amortization. Ordinary tariff-refund benefits remain in adjusted earnings. EPS also uses a two-class calculation that allocates some earnings to participating securities.

Completed acquisitions and ownership

Steelcase closed on December 10, 2025. Purchase consideration had a $1.922 billion fair value, including $864.5 million of cash, shares and replacement stock awards. HNI issued 25.2 million shares as part of the deal. The prior-year quarter preceded the acquisition.

September's dealer purchase acquired a 70% controlling interest for $25.5 million in cash, or $24.1 million after acquired cash. HNI also assumed $35.4 million of dealer debt. The current organic-revenue reconciliation removes $856.6 million for Steelcase and $14.1 million for the dealer.

Cash, borrowing and shareholder returns

Nine-month operating cash was $163.3 million, versus $198.9 million. The original first-half figures were negative $32.0 million and positive $43.7 million. Subtracting those totals gives quarterly cash generation of approximately $195.3 million and $155.2 million.

Nine-month capital purchases were $86.9 million, with another $4.2 million of capitalized software. Cash dividends were $77.6 million. Financing cash also included $56 million repaid on company-owned life-insurance policy loans.

October cash was $110.3 million, with $3.7 million of short-term investments. Borrowing carrying amounts totaled $1.355 billion, down from July's $1.375 billion but above $1.293 billion at year-end. Finance leases of $13.4 million and operating leases of $289.8 million are separate.

Remaining repurchase authorization was $277.9 million. Actual purchases totaled $6.3 million at trade value, with $5.6 million settled in cash and the rest unsettled at quarter-end. Read our comparison of the savings target and earnings outlook.
