Why Advanced Energy's sales boom is tying up more cash

Nine-month profit more than doubled, while operating cash flow slipped. New debt helped lift the cash balance as the company invested for further growth.

Advanced Energy's sales beat its own forecast as demand strengthened for power equipment used in semiconductor manufacturing and data centers. Supporting that growth is tying up more money in inventory, customer receivables and investment.

Revenue reached $696.4 million in the quarter ended September 30, 2026, up 50% from a year earlier and above the $660 million upper end of August's forecast. Adjusted earnings of $3.65 per share also beat the earlier $3.25 upper end.

Stocking up for expected demand

Over the first nine months, consolidated net income more than doubled to $236.5 million from $96.1 million. Cash from operations slipped to $144.1 million from $152.8 million.

Inventories absorbed $234 million of cash and customer receivables another $149.1 million. Larger amounts owed to suppliers provided a partial offset. Management attributed the inventory build to expected demand and the receivables increase to higher sales.

The investment bill grew too

Capital spending rose to $117.2 million from $69.9 million. It supported manufacturing capacity, a new company-wide planning system and other capabilities across multiple sites.

Research by Ticker Byline shows that consolidated operating cash flow less capital spending fell about 68%, to $26.9 million from $82.9 million, over those same nine-month periods.

The latest quarter's growth was broad. Semiconductor-equipment revenue rose 64% to $322.2 million, while data-center sales increased 49% to $256.2 million. Gross margin on the reported accounting basis expanded to 41.5% from 37.6% a year earlier.

Debt issuance changed the cash balance

Advanced Energy ended September with $1.425 billion of cash. Its cash-flow statement records $1.129 billion of proceeds from new convertible debt during the first nine months. During the second quarter, it issued $1.15 billion of convertible notes due in 2031 with no regular interest payments.

After quarter-end, on October 2, it paid $136.4 million in cash to settle the remaining principal of its older convertible notes. It also issued about half a million shares for the conversion value above principal. The company also repurchased $30 million of shares during October.

Management expects fourth-quarter sales of $710 million to $760 million. It says the Thailand factory ramp is on track and expects a growing contribution from new products in 2027. The Advanced Energy company profile tracks the earlier forecasts, the financing and the cash invested to support expansion.
