QuidelOrtho's cash improved. Why launch another cost overhaul?
Quarterly cash improved, yet the nine-month deficit widened. The new program targets more than $80 million in annual savings in 2027.

QuidelOrtho is starting another cost-cutting program as it trims its annual earnings outlook again. The diagnostics company expects more than $80 million in annual savings in 2027, with approximately $30 million to $35 million of restructuring charges in the fourth quarter.
The latest cash figures give that plan a concrete test. Third-quarter free cash flow recovered to just above zero, but the first nine months still consumed more cash than a year earlier.
What improved in the quarter
Research by Ticker Byline shows that lower capital purchases supplied $28.8 million, or about 30%, of the $95 million improvement in quarterly free cash flow. Better operating cash flow supplied $65.1 million, and proceeds from equipment sales supplied another $1.1 million.
Operating cash flow turned positive at $19.6 million, compared with a $45.5 million outflow a year earlier. After capital purchases and disposal proceeds, free cash flow was $0.3 million, versus a $94.7 million outflow.
The longer comparison is less reassuring. Nine-month free cash flow was negative $202.8 million, against negative $169.6 million in 2025.
A new plan follows earlier promises
The November program will organize the business around Core Diagnostics and Point of Care Diagnostics. Management says the changes will improve accountability, spending decisions and profitability.
An earlier program, launched in 2025, targeted approximately $50 million of net cost savings through 2027. The new announcement does not establish how the two programs overlap.
QuidelOrtho began 2026 forecasting $120 million to $160 million of annual free cash flow. It lowered that range in May and withdrew it in August while addressing working capital and weaker demand. The fiscal year ends January 3, 2027.
The outlook narrows again
The company now expects $540 million to $545 million of adjusted EBITDA, down from August's $540 million to $560 million. Adjusted EBITDA removes interest, taxes, depreciation, amortization and selected other items. The revenue range is now $2.52 billion to $2.54 billion, versus $2.52 billion to $2.60 billion.
There is positive evidence inside the decline. Sales excluding respiratory products, China and the U.S. donor-screening business grew 3% at constant exchange rates. Total quarterly revenue nevertheless fell 12%, and adjusted EBITDA declined to $148 million from $177.1 million.
The much smaller GAAP net loss also needs context: the prior-year quarter included a $700.7 million goodwill impairment. The QuidelOrtho company profile follows the cash recovery, borrowing and the separate terms of its earlier credit amendment.
