Napco's settlement lifts earnings as cash flow slumps

Growing service revenue supported sales, but the legal settlement helps explain why reported operating profit and cash generation moved apart.

Napco Security Technologies paid $15 million toward a legal settlement in its September 2026 quarter and recorded a $1 million profit benefit from the same case. The two entries help explain why reported earnings improved while operating cash flow fell sharply.

Research by Ticker Byline shows that the $1 million benefit exceeded Napco’s entire $474,000 increase in reported operating income. The company’s own adjusted operating income, which removes that benefit, fell to $13.1 million from $13.6 million a year earlier.

An earlier estimate meets the cash bill

Napco had already recorded a $16 million liability for the class-action settlement in the previous financial year. It paid $15 million during the quarter ended September 30, 2026, the first quarter of its 2027 financial year.

The company says actual insurance payments reduced its share of the settlement below the earlier estimate. The $1 million difference was released into profit.

Operating cash flow was $2.8 million, down from $11.6 million in the comparable quarter. Lower receivables supported cash flow, while higher inventory absorbed cash. A final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for December 17.

Services grow as equipment sales weaken

The security equipment maker’s recurring service revenue rose 11.5% to $26.1 million. That helped offset a 7.3% decline in equipment revenue to $23.9 million, leaving total revenue up 1.7% at $50.0 million.

Chief Executive Officer Kevin S. Buchel said two distributors reduced their purchases of locking products, while their sales to end customers increased.

Napco’s broader adjusted EBITDA measure rose 3.8% to $15.5 million. It excludes interest income, taxes and charges for using long-lived assets, along with stock-based pay, the settlement benefit and nonrecurring legal costs. Those legal costs increased from a year earlier, helping explain why this measure and adjusted operating income moved differently.
