Why Harmony's record sales did not lift profit

Higher royalties and a patent milestone absorbed the benefit of growing sales. A further development payment is due after the quarter.

Harmony Biosciences set a quarterly sales record, but licensing costs took a bigger share of the proceeds and operating profit fell. A $25 million patent milestone added to the bill, with another payment triggered after the quarter ended.

Revenue reached $268.9 million, compared with $239.5 million a year earlier. Operating profit fell to $54.2 million from $65.5 million, while net income declined to $48.2 million from $50.9 million.

Less of each sales dollar was left over

Research by Ticker Byline shows that gross profit, the amount left after product costs, grew just 4.7% despite a 12.3% increase in revenue.

Product costs rose to $80.7 million from $59.7 million. Harmony attributed the higher cost relative to sales mainly to royalties under its Novitium license agreement. That agreement dates from January and covers current and future pitolisant-based products.

A patent milestone became an expense

A separate agreement with MSN Laboratories triggered the $25 million charge after patent approval in September. Harmony recorded it as research and development expense and expects to make the cash payment in the fourth quarter of 2026.

Our comparison with the June quarterly report shows that this was already a disclosed conditional obligation. The change is that the patent condition was met and the cost entered earnings.

The comparable quarter included a $15 million development milestone for ZYN002.

Another development milestone under the Novitium agreement was achieved in October. Harmony expects to record that $10 million expense and make the payment in the fourth quarter. Unlike the MSN charge, it has yet to enter reported profit.

The sales forecast holds

Harmony retained its annual revenue forecast of $1.0 billion to $1.04 billion. Its challenge is to turn those growing sales into profit while funding royalties and the development pipeline.

Operating activities generated $196.9 million over the first nine months, compared with $222.0 million a year earlier. The newly accrued $25 million milestone was still unpaid at September 30. Cash and cash equivalents were $647.1 million, alongside substantial short- and long-term investments.
