Analysis BWXT

BWXT lifts its 2027 profit outlook. What is holding back cash?

The nuclear supplier had generated $315.5 million of free cash flow through September. Next year’s plan assumes the medical-business sale closes at the end of 2026.

BWX Technologies raised its preliminary 2027 earnings outlook just over a month after presenting its original plan. It now expects adjusted EBITDA, a profit measure before interest, taxes, depreciation, amortization and specified costs, to grow by high single digits to low double digits. September's framework called for high-single-digit growth.

Free cash flow, the cash left from operations after capital spending, is expected to be flat to slightly higher. The difference reflects money needed to support the nuclear supplier's expanding business.

More work needs more cash

BWXT expects only modest growth in operating cash flow next year as investment in working capital absorbs some of the benefit from higher profits. That means more money committed to carrying out contracts. Capital spending is expected to remain around 6% of sales.

The revenue outlook still calls for high-single-digit growth. The change since September is a stronger earnings outlook, rather than a higher sales-growth forecast.

This year's cash generation is already well advanced

The latest results show strong cash generation. Third-quarter free cash flow rose to $150.5 million from $94.9 million a year earlier. Management credited higher net income, advance billings and working-capital management.

Research by Ticker Byline shows that BWXT had generated about 90% of the low end of its annual free-cash-flow forecast by September 30. Operating cash flow of $451.7 million, less $136.2 million of capital spending, left $315.5 million for the first nine months. The annual target is $350 million to $360 million.

Third-quarter revenue increased 10% to $953 million, while adjusted EBITDA rose 19% to $179.7 million. Net income attributable to BWXT rose to $101.7 million from $82.1 million.

Which forecast actually changed?

For 2026, BWXT now expects roughly $667 million of adjusted EBITDA. That equals the midpoint of the $662 million to $672 million range issued in August. It narrowed adjusted earnings-per-share guidance to $4.72 to $4.77 and lifted the bottom of its cash-flow range by $5 million.

The 2027 plan assumes the medical-business sale closes at the end of 2026. The quarterly filing allows completion in 2026 or the first quarter of 2027. BWXT has already completed a separate expansion: its July 1 purchase of Precision Components Group added U.S. manufacturing capacity.

The BWXT company profile follows these transactions, the earlier guidance and the balance sheet behind the growth plan.
